Description
Quanta Pharma Selank 10mg Nasal Spray
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide built on tuftsin, a short immune-regulating peptide the body makes naturally, with a three-amino-acid extension that makes it far more stable. It was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Quanta Pharma version comes ready mixed in a metered nasal spray.
What the research covers
Research has focused on three areas. The first is anxiety and stress: Selank is studied for calming effects without the sedation or dependence associated with benzodiazepines, and appears to act partly through the GABA system. The second is cognition, with animal work looking at memory and learning. The third is immune signalling, reflecting its tuftsin origin, including effects on interleukin-6 and on the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).
Where the evidence sits
Selank is registered as an anxiolytic in Russia, and most of the published clinical work comes from Russian research groups. Independent trials outside Russia are limited, so the evidence is best described as promising but narrow. It is not licensed as a medicine in the UK and is supplied strictly as a laboratory research chemical.
