SereneQ Glutathione

Glutathione (γ-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinylglycine, GSH) is a tripeptide that is the most abundant intracellular antioxidant in mammalian cells, present in millimolar concentrations in most tissues. It is synthesised in two enzyme-catalysed steps from glutamate, cysteine and glycine, with cysteine availability being the rate-limiting factor. Glutathione levels decline with age, chronic disease, high oxidative load and nutritional deficiency. The tripeptide is not simply an antioxidant — it is the central node of a redox signalling network and a cofactor for multiple enzyme families.

What the research covers

Glutathione’s functions span several systems. In phase II detoxification, glutathione S-transferases conjugate GSH to electrophilic compounds and reactive metabolites, making them water-soluble for excretion — this is critical for processing drugs, pollutants and carcinogens in the liver. In antioxidant defence, it directly neutralises reactive oxygen species and regenerates vitamins C and E. In immune function, it is required for lymphocyte proliferation and natural killer cell activity, and glutathione-depleted immune cells are impaired. In mitochondria it maintains the membrane environment required for efficient electron transport. Intravenous administration bypasses the gut barrier, where oral glutathione is largely broken down before absorption.

Where the evidence sits

The evidence base is large but heterogeneous. Most mechanistic work is in vitro. Clinical studies exist in specific contexts (liver disease, cancer, Parkinson’s, HIV). Not licensed as a medicine. Supplied strictly as a laboratory research chemical.
