Description
SereneQ MOTS-c
MOTS-c is encoded in mitochondrial DNA rather than nuclear DNA, which makes it part of a small family of mitochondria-derived peptides (MDPs) that act as intercellular signals. The full name is Mitochondrial Open reading frame of the Twelve S rRNA-c. It was identified by the Lee laboratory at USC in 2015 and has since accumulated a body of metabolic research focused on insulin sensitivity, exercise physiology and longevity pathways. Circulating MOTS-c levels decline with age and are lower in obese individuals, which is what positioned it as a research target in age-related metabolic decline.
What the research covers
MOTS-c acts on skeletal muscle and other metabolic tissues, activating AMPK — the enzyme that functions as a cellular energy sensor and upregulates fat oxidation and glucose uptake. Animal studies have demonstrated improved insulin sensitivity, reduced fat accumulation and improved exercise endurance. A study in older men showed that exercise increases circulating MOTS-c, suggesting it may be part of the mechanism through which physical activity benefits metabolism. Gene expression work has also linked it to the SIRT1/PGC-1α pathway, which governs mitochondrial biogenesis.
Where the evidence sits
MOTS-c research is at an early stage. Most published data is from animal studies or cell culture. Human data is limited to observational measurements of endogenous levels rather than intervention trials. It does not hold a medicines licence anywhere. Supplied strictly as a laboratory research chemical.
The pen format
This is where SereneQ does things differently. Instead of lyophilised vials that need reconstituting and drawing up separately, the compound arrives pre-loaded in solution in a graduated injection pen with a dial and a dose window.
- 36.81mg MOTS-c total in 3ml (92% of 40mg label claim — batch tested)
- 12.27mg/ml · approx 123mcg per unit
- Graduated dial with dose window
- 300 units total per pen
- 4 × sealed pen tips, 32G 0.23 × 4mm
- Batch number, expiry and serial printed directly on the pen barrel
Handling and storage
- Store refrigerated at 2–8°C. Do not freeze.
- Keep in the outer carton, away from direct light.
- Short periods at room temperature during transit are expected and normal.
- Use a fresh sealed tip for each dispense. Dispose of tips in a sharps container.
- Expiry 12/2027 on sealed, correctly stored stock.
- Keep out of reach of children and animals.
