SereneQ HCG

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a glycoprotein hormone with a heterodimeric structure — an alpha subunit shared with LH, FSH and TSH, and a beta subunit that is unique to hCG. Its beta subunit binds to LH receptors with high affinity, which is why it functions as an LH analogue in research contexts. In pregnancy it is produced by the syncytiotrophoblast and is responsible for maintaining corpus luteum progesterone production until the placenta takes over. Outside of pregnancy its LH-mimicking activity makes it the most extensively studied tool in male reproductive endocrinology research.

What the research covers

In male reproductive research, hCG is used to stimulate Leydig cells to produce testosterone — essentially mimicking LH at the testicular level. Research has covered testicular descent in cryptorchidism, male hypogonadism, sperm production support, and its use alongside testosterone in men receiving hormone therapy who wish to preserve testicular function and size. In female research it has been studied for ovulation induction. Its pharmaceutical form (Pregnyl, Ovitrelle) is approved for these indications.
