Description
SereneQ Melanotan-2
Melanotan-2 is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analogue of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It was developed at the University of Arizona in the 1980s as part of a programme to find a photoprotective compound, and its structure was modified from the natural α-MSH linear peptide to increase potency and resistance to enzymatic degradation. Unlike Melanotan-1 (afamelanotide), which was developed specifically for its selective MC1R activity, Melanotan-2 is non-selective and activates MC1R, MC3R and MC4R — which is what gives it a broader and more complex effect profile.
What the research covers
The melanocortin receptor system sits within the central nervous system and in peripheral tissue. MC1R is expressed in melanocytes and governs pigmentation and UV protection — that is the pathway the University of Arizona programme was targeting. MC3R and MC4R are expressed in the hypothalamus and other CNS areas. MC4R activation is what produces the sexual arousal effects documented in early male subject studies, as well as the appetite suppression observed in some research. MC3R is involved in energy homeostasis. The three pathways operating simultaneously is what makes MT-2 a complex research compound with a wide effect profile at varying doses.
Where the evidence sits
Early human studies established proof-of-concept for pigmentation and sexual arousal in small groups. There are no large-scale controlled trials. MT-2 was not taken forward commercially due to the breadth of its receptor activity — PT-141 (bremelanotide) was derived from MT-2 but cyclised differently to reduce the erection-inducing effect for the female arousal indication. MT-2 does not hold a medicines licence anywhere. Supplied strictly as a laboratory research chemical.
The pen format
This is where SereneQ does things differently. Instead of lyophilised vials that need reconstituting and drawing up separately, the compound arrives pre-loaded in solution in a graduated injection pen with a dial and a dose window.
