SereneQ Kisspeptin-10

Kisspeptin-10 is a 10-amino acid neuropeptide and the most potent endogenous activator of GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) neurons. It sits at the top of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis — GnRH neurons do not respond directly to gonadal hormones; instead they are regulated by kisspeptin neurons that are themselves sensitive to oestrogen, testosterone and metabolic signals. Kisspeptin was identified in 2001 and was originally known as metastin, having been discovered as a metastasis suppressor gene product. The connection to reproduction was discovered shortly after.

What the research covers

Kisspeptin-10 is a powerful stimulant of LH and FSH secretion — both in acute bolus experiments and in more sustained research designs. Human studies have demonstrated robust LH pulses following kisspeptin administration, with the amplitude and pattern depending on the background hormonal environment. Research has covered its role in puberty initiation, seasonal reproduction, infertility associated with hypothalamic dysfunction, and its interaction with energy status (leptin and insulin signalling converge on kisspeptin neurons, which is the mechanism linking nutritional status to reproductive function). There is also a growing body of work on its effects on sexual behaviour and olfaction.

Handling and storage
