SereneQ Tesamorelin

Tesamorelin is a synthetic analogue of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) in which a trans-3-hexenoic acid group is conjugated to the N-terminus to increase stability. It stimulates the pituitary gland to produce growth hormone through the body’s own feedback loop rather than delivering exogenous GH. It is the only GHRH analogue to have completed Phase 3 trials and received FDA approval — for the specific indication of HIV-associated lipodystrophy (excess visceral fat accumulation linked to antiretroviral therapy), where it was approved as Egrifta.

What the research covers

The primary evidence base is the lipodystrophy trials, which showed significant reductions in visceral adipose tissue (VAT) measured by CT scan over 26 weeks, alongside improvements in triglycerides, non-HDL cholesterol and waist circumference. Research outside that specific indication has examined tesamorelin in healthy adults with abdominal adiposity, in cognitive function studies in older adults, and in GH-deficient populations. The GHRH mechanism preserves pulsatile GH secretion and the intact feedback loop — the pituitary can still respond to somatostatin — which is why its GH profile differs from direct exogenous somatropin.
